Aluminum Tubing Entryway Gate at Gosman’s in Montauk: A Coastal Fabrication Project
Coastal properties put materials through a unique kind of stress test. Salt air, constant moisture, and direct sun exposure will break down standard materials far faster than an inland location ever would, which made material choice the first major decision when Hofer Built was brought in to fabricate a custom entryway gate for Gosman’s in Montauk.
Aluminum tubing was the clear choice for this project specifically because of its resistance to corrosion. Unlike standard steel, which requires regular maintenance and protective coating to survive long-term in a coastal environment, aluminum naturally resists the rust and pitting that salt air causes over time. For a high-traffic commercial entryway like Gosman’s, where the gate is seen and used by guests constantly, that durability translates directly into lower long-term maintenance costs and a finish that holds up season after season.
Design for an entryway gate also has to balance two priorities that can sometimes pull in different directions: making a strong first impression for visitors, while still being structurally functional as an actual gate that opens, closes, and holds up to daily use. We fabricated the gate using tubular aluminum framing, which gives a clean, modern look while keeping the structure lightweight enough to operate smoothly without putting excess strain on hinges or hardware over time.

Welding aluminum tubing requires a different technique and skill set compared to steel, since aluminum behaves differently under heat and is more prone to warping if not handled correctly. Clean, precise welds were essential not just for strength, but for appearance — an entryway gate is one of the first things visitors see, so weld quality directly affects the finished look of the piece.

Hardware selection mattered just as much as the gate structure itself. Hinges and latching mechanisms exposed to coastal air need to be rated for marine or coastal environments, otherwise even a well-built gate frame can be let down by hardware that corrodes or seizes up within a season or two. We selected hardware specifically rated to handle Montauk’s coastal conditions, so the gate continues operating smoothly well beyond its first year.
Working with a recognizable property like Gosman’s also meant the gate needed to fit the existing character of the location, rather than looking like an unrelated addition. We worked through the design with that context in mind, making sure the finished gate complemented the surrounding entryway rather than standing apart from it.
Projects like this are a good example of how material selection and fabrication technique have to be adapted based on where a piece will actually live, not just its intended function. If you have a coastal property on Long Island or in the Hamptons that needs a durable, custom-fabricated gate or entryway feature, Hofer Built has direct experience building for these exact conditions.
